Chapter eleven (Narayani Stuti)

Om prostrations to Chandika

She who is glorious like rising sun, whose crown is adorned with a crescent-moon gem, whose breasts are firm, three eyed, ever smiling, who holds goad, noose and bestowes boons & fearlessness, I meditate upon that Bhuvaneshvari.

 Om prostrations to Chandika

The sage said: 1

When the great Asura lord was thus slain by Devi, Indra and other Devas led by Agni, with their object fulfilled and their cheerful faces illumining the quarters, praised Her, Katyayani: 2

“Oh Devi, you who remove the sufferings of your suppliants, be gracious. Be propitious, Oh Mother of world. Be gracious, Oh Mother of universe. Protect us. You are, Oh Devi, the ruler of all that is moving and unmoving. 3

You are the sole substratum of the world, because you subsist in the form of the earth. By you, who exist as the cosmic-ocean, the entire universe is gratified, Oh Devi of inviolable valour! 4

You are the all-pervading Shakti of invincible exploits. You are the primordial Maya, which is the source of the universe; by you the universe has been deluded. Oh Devi, when gracious, you bestow Moksha. 5

Vedas and other eighteen Vidyas are your forms, Oh Devi; so are all women in the world, endowed with sixty-four attributes. By you alone, the Mother, this world is filled. What praise can there be for you who are of the nature of primary and secondary expression regarding worthy of praise? 6

When you have been lauded as the embodiment of all beings, The Supreme Mother Goddess and bestower of both spiritual as well as material benedictions, what words, however excellent, can praise you? 7

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh you who pervades all as intelligence, and bestow heaven and liberation. 8

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Kalike in the form of minutes, moments and other divisions of time, bring about change in things, and have (thus) the Shakti who brings down apocalypse. 9

Salutation be to you Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Parvati who are the good of all good, Oh Shakti of Lord Shiva, who accomplish every object, the refuge of all. 10

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, you are the energy behind creation, sustenance and annihilation and are eternal. You are Trigunatmika. 11

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh you who are sole solace of the dejected and distressed and dispeller of their sufferings. 12

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Brahmani who rides a chariot yoked by swans and sprinkle water with Kusa grass. 13

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Maheshvari who bears a trident, a crescent moon and the serpent, and rides the great bull Nandi. 14

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Kaumari who rides a peacock, eternally pure, has a rooster-bannered flag and holds an excellent spear. 15

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Vaishnavi who is armed with great weapons of conch, discus, club and Sharanga bow, be gracious. 16

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Varahi who holds a formidable discus, and uplift the earth with thy tusk, Oh auspicious Devi. 17

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Narasimhi who put forth your efforts to slay Daityas, who possess the benevolence of saving the three worlds. 18

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Aindri who wears a crown, armed with a great thunderbolt, are dazzling with a thousand eyes, and are the slayer of Vritrasura. 19

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Shivaduti who slew the mighty hosts of Asuras, Oh you of formidable form and who utters a fierce roar. 20

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, Oh Chamunda who has protruding teeth, formidable form, wears a garland of skulls/severed-heads and is slayer of Chanda & Munda. 21

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, who are abundance, modesty, Brahmavidya, faith, nourishment and nourisher of Pitris, eternal, Maharatri and Mahamaya. 22

Salutation be to you, Oh shelter of all Jivas, who are intellect, Vidya Shakti, Supreme, Satvic, Rajasic, Tamasic, manifested from the combined brilliance of all deities and Shakti of Parameshvara (Lord Shiva), be propitious. 23

Oh sovereign of all, who is all that happens as well as the cause of all causes, endowed with all strength, save us from all perils. Salutation be to you, oh Durge Devi! 24

May this benign countenance of yours adorned with three eyes, redeem us from all our errors and protect us from all fears. Salutation be to you, O Katyayani! 25

Surrounded with flames, exceedingly sharp destroyer of all Asuras, may that trident of yours guard us from fear. Salutation be to you, O Bhadrakali! 26

May your bell that fills the world with its ringing, and destroys the prowess of Daityas, guard us, Oh Devi, as a mother protects her children, from all evils. 27

May your brilliant sword, smeared with the mire like blood and of Asuras, be for our welfare, Oh Chandika, we bow to you. 28

When satisfied, you destroy all illness but when wrathful you frustrate all the longed-for desires. No calamity befalls men who have sought you. Those who have sought you become verily a refuge of others. 29

This slaughter that you, Oh Devi, taking multiple Avatars like Kali and others, have now wrought on the great Asuras who advocate unrighteousness, Oh Ambika, who else could do that? 30

Who is there except you in the sciences, in the scriptures, and in the Vedic sayings the light the lamp of discrimination? (Still) you cause this universe to whirl about again and again within the dense darkness of the depths of attachment. 31

Where raksasas and snakes of virulent poison are, where foes and hosts of robbers exist, where forest conflagrations occur, there and in the mid-sea, you stand and save world. 32

Oh Jagadishvari, you protect the universe. As the self of the universe, you are Vishvarupa. You are object of worshiped to Brahma, Vishnu and other deities. Those who bow in devotion to you themselves become the refuge of the universe. 33

Oh Devi, be pleased and protect us always from fear of foes, as you have done just now by the slaughter of Asuras. And destroy quickly the sins of all worlds and the great calamities which have sprung from the maturing of evil portents. 34

Oh Devi you who remove the afflictions of the universe, be gracious to us who have bowed to you. Oh object of worship to dwellers of the three worlds, be boon-giver to the worlds.” 35
Devi said: 36

“Oh Devas, I am prepared to bestow a boon. Choose whatever boon you desire in your mind, for the welfare of the world. I shall grant it.” 37
Devas said: 38

“Oh sovereign of all, this same manner, you must destroy all our enemies and all the afflictions of three worlds.” 39
Devi said: 40

“When the twenty-eighth Mahayuga will arrive during the reign of Vaisvsvata Manu, two other great Asuras, Sumbha and Nisumbha will be born. 41

Manifesting from Yashoda’s womb, in the race of Nandagopa, I will make Vindhya mountains my home and slay them (Sumbha & Nisumbha) both. 42

And again having manifested in a formidable form on earth, I shall slay Danavas, who are the descendants of Vipracitti. 43

When I shall devour the fierce Asuras descended from Vipracitti, my teeth shall get stained with blood and become red like pomegranate blossom. 44

Therefore when Devas in heaven and men on the earth praise me, shall always praise me as Raktadanta. 45

And again when rain shall fail for a period of hundred years, propitiated by sages I shall be born on the drought-ridden earth, but not womb-begotten. 46

Then I shall behold the sages with a hundred (infinite) eyes and so mankind shall glorify me as Satakshi. 47

At that time, Oh Devas, I shall nourish the whole world with life -sustaining vegetables, born out of my own (cosmic) body, till rains set in. 48

I shall be famed on the earth then as Shakambhari. At that very period I shall slay the great Asura named Durgamasura. Thereby I shall be known as Durga Devi. 49-50
And again, assuming a fierce form on the Himalayas, I shall destroy the Rakshasas for the protection of the sages. All of them, prostrating reverently, shall praise me, and thereby I shall be known as Bhima Devi. 51-52
When Arunasura shall wreck great havoc in the three worlds, having taken a collective bee-form, consisting of innumerable bees, I shall slay that great Asura for the good of the world. And then people shall laud me everywhere as Bhramari Devi. 53-54
Thus whenever trouble arises due to the advent of the Danavas, I shall take an Avatar and destroy the foes of Devas.”
Thus ends the eleventh chapter dealing with the hymn to Narayani of Devi Mahatmyah in Markandeya Purana, during the reign of Savarni Manu.
