Chandipath Vidhi

Sri Ganeshaye namah

A person with all senses in control rises in the morning and after bathing, performs Nitya Karmas like Sandhya, Gayatri etc. After completion of Nitya Karmas, one must sit on a clean Asana (prayer rug), facing either East or North. Thereafter, with utmost devotion, one must perform Chandipath with the knowledge of its meaning (both literal as well as esoteric) and accurate pronunciation. First Achaman and Svastivachan are to be done, followed by worshiping or remembering Guru, after which one must take Snakalpa of Chandipath with the following verses:

'Sivorom tat sat adya amuke MAsi amuke pakShe amukatithO amukgotra: Sri amuka devaSarmA srvApaCchAntipUrvaka: Sri CaNDikAprItikAma: (for Nishkama Bhakti) / ManohbhIShTasiddhikAMo Sri krShNadvEpAyanAbhidhAna MaharShi vedavyAsa proktajayAkhya MArkaNDeya purANAntargata "om MArkaNDeya uvACa - sAvarNi: sUryatanaya:" ityArbhya "sAvarNirbhavitA Manu:" ityantam devI MAhAtMyam sakrt (ekAvrtti for one round of Chandipath) [dvi: for two rounds, tri: for three rounds etc.] pAThkarMAham kariShye (kariShyAmi if recited for others).'

After that, perform Asana Shuddhi, Bhutapasaran, Pushpa Shuddhi and perform Panchopachara Puja of Panchadevatas (Ganesha, Shiva, Durga, Vishnu and Surya) and perform Pranayam for Bija Mantra "Hrim". Then perform Nyasa as follows:

RShyAdi nyAsa :-

Then perform Nyasa of Hrim Mantra for seven times. After Nyasa, meditate upon Chandika Devi as per the Dhyana Mantra(s) given. The painting of Chandika Devi posted on the home page of Devi Mahatmyah is in accordance to the Dhyana Mantra.
Then perform Manasa Puja of Chandika Devi, followed by invoking Devi with the five Avahani Mudras:

"om hrIm CaNDike devI ihAgaCch, ihAgaCch l
iha tiShTha iha tiShTha l iha sannidhehi iha sannidhehi l
iha sannirudhyasva iha sannirudhyasva l
iha sannihitA bhava iha sannihitA bhava l
atrAdhiShThAnam kuru devI l

Then join your hands and recite this verse -

"om deveSi bhaktisulabhe parivArasaManvite l
yAvatvAm pUjayiShyAmi tAvatvam susthirA bhava ll"

Then perform atleast Panchopachara Puja of Devi followed by "om hrIm CaNDikAyE naMa:".
Then recite Chandi Gayatri Mantra "om Em CaNDikAyE vidMahe tripurAyE dhImahi tanno GOrI praCodayAt klIm ll" and after meditating upon the image of Chandika Devi once more, offer Pushpanjali thrice.

Then perform Panchopachara Puja of Devi Mahatmyah book with mantra "om devI MAhAtMya pustakAya naMa:"followed by Japa of Hrim mantra 108 times. Thereafter recite Navarna Mantra, Utkilana Mantra and Shapoddhara Mantra. After that, recite Argala Stotram, Keelaka Stava, Devi Kavacha and Ratri Suktam serially before you begin with Chandipath.

Performing Chandipath by your memory with fluent pronunciation is favoured more above reciting by looking at the book. But if one is unable to do that then Chandipath with the book placed in front on a pedestal after duly worshiping it is suggested. One should perform Chandipath which is neither too loud, nor too feeble; neither too fast, nor too slow; in short, Chandipath is done with concentration and devotion is the best.

Before reciting any of the three Charitras, one should meditate upon the image of the presiding Devi. Also, it is advisable that Dhyana with or without Nyasa to be done before beginning with a chapter.
After Chandipath, it is mandatory for one to recite Aparadhkshama Stotram and Devi Suktam. Then offer water to Devi by thinking of Her, followed by this Mantra:

"om guhyAtiguhyagopatrI tvam  gRhANAsMatkRtam japam l
siddhirbhavatu Me devI tvatprasAdAnMaheSvarI ll"

Here is the Navarna Mantra: "om Em hrIm klIm CAMuNDAyE viCCe l "

Utkilan Mantra: "om SrIm klIm hrIm CaNDIke utkIlanam kuru kuru svAhA l " recite this seven times.

Shapoddhara Mantra: "om hrIm klIm SrIm krIm krIm CaNDike devI SApAnugraham kuru kuru svAhA l" recite this seven times too.

Special instructions:

1) One may ring a bell before beginning and after ending a chapter.
2) Once you sit for Chandipath, you cannot leave it mid-way. However, in case of emergency, one should end atleast the Charitra one is reciting and then by bowing one's head at the lotus feet of Devi, seek forgiveness with the promise of completing the remaining Chandipath.
3) One can offer oblations while reciting every verse of Devi Mahatmyah. But beware! Oblations in such cases should always be 700 in number. Do not recite the Mantras given in Chandipath Vidhi, Chandika Dhyanam, Argala Stotram, Keelaka Stava, Devi Kavacha and Aparadhkshama Stotram; for that will bear the exact opposite fruit of the purpose that the aforementioned Mantras serve. There are separate arrangements for offering oblations while reciting Ratri Suktam and Devi Suktam, but we will not go there for now.

May Chandi Mata be pleased with us.
